The boys tried to kill a pig which shows their gradual move to savagery.
The boys don't care about the fire going out because they aren't worried about getting rescued. Civil boys would want to be rescued.
Roger is throwing rocks at the other boy but not hitting him. This is his last bit of civility to keep from hitting him.
The boys finally make their move to savagery and kill the pig very graphically.
The final point when savagery completely takes over is when they murder Simon. After this, there is no going back.
