After the soup, we gathered between the bunks. The veterans told stories of how life was before Wiesel came.
"The old men stayed in their corner, silent, motionless, hunted-down creatures. Some were praying."
How I longed for an order to run! The military march. The gate. The camp. I ran towards Block 36. Were there still miracles on this earth? He was alive. He had passed the second selection. He had still proved his usefulness... I gave him back his knife and spoon.
I picked this scene on paragraph __ because it showed some of the prisoners trying to enjoy what little time they have together until the day of their death. It also shows that the veterans care for the new arrival since they have now experience a traumatic event and they give advice to them.
Pick a scene that supports the idea that although beaten down, the prisoners had creative ways of coping with their confinement and sustaining themselves.
The word with a strong connotation would be hunted-down and motionless. These words bring a sorrow and despair tone. They convey the tone of the narrative because the words themselves indicate that some have given up and others were begging for a miracle.
In lines 32-33, Wiesel writes, "the old men stated in their corner, silent, motionless, hunted-down creatures. Some were praying. "
He using this style of writing to give the feeling of suspense and the unknown. The use of short sentences also give and support the connotation of hopefulness as well as encouraging. The approach affects the meaning because it makes the reader suspense in the story as well as bringing a hint of encouragement and a upbeat ending to a real nightmare of reality.
Wiesel sometimes uses punctuation and sentence structure to convey meaning. Reread the second to last paragraph in the text. Why does he use short, incomplete sentence ? How does this stylistic approach affect meaning?
