Storyboard Text

  • Election of 1860- Abraham Lincoln is elected as the President of the United States, without a single electoral vote from the South.
  • John Brown's raid (1859)- John Brown take over the arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. It was an attempt by Brown, an abolitionist, to initiate a slave revolt. 
  • Scott is not a free man, he is property!
  • The Compromise of 1850- A set of five separate bills which maintained balance between free and slave states, and slave and free power in the Congress.
  • We will not be a part of the Union anymore!
  • We will cede and form our own state, a FREE state!
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854- this act attempted to solve the question of slavery by allowing the citizens of the states to locally decide whether to continue the system of slavery. 
  • Dred Scott Case- this case about a man who sued for his freedom wen he was brought to a slave state, on the grounds that he once lived in a free state. He won his case in lower court but Missouri supreme court went against and reversed the decision.
  • The Secession of South Carolina - As a result of Abraham Lincoln's election to the president's office, South Carolina announced its secession from the Union, after this many other Southern pro-slavery states ceded.
