Miss Emma, Reverend Ambrose, Grant, and Jefferson's Aunt all meet at the courthouse.
Reverend Ambrose says a prayer so that the food will never get cold.
Jefferson doesn't eat and tells Miss Emma he isn't hungry.
Grant asks Jefferson to walk around with him. They start doing laps around the room and tells him that he can be a hero if he will just be a man, not a hog.
Grant tell Jefferson to be nicer to Miss Emma and explains what a hero is.
Grant tells Jefferson he isn't a hero but he says Jefferson can be by declining to be a doormat for the white men who have condemned him to death. Jefferson starts crying.
