Storyboard Text

  • Well our declaration of Independence against Britain went great, but our new government under the Articles isn't going as good.
  • Yes, the lack of power towards the central government has put our country in ruin. We should hold a conference to draft a new constitution.
  • Now that we're all here, how will our new representation of the government go.
  • Nay. As the representative of Virginia, I say that its only fair if bigger states get more votes.
  • As the representative of New Jersey, I say that all states have equal representation with one vote per state.
  • That sounds like a great idea. What about the issue of slavery?
  • Well it isn't fair for the northern slaves to count the slaves, but it isn't fair to not count them for the south. So how about compromise and make each slave count at 3/5 of a person for population?
  • How about we compromise and make a bicameral legislature with both ideas?
  • That sounds like a great idea!
  • That sounds like a great idea. A legislative branch, an executive branch, and a judicial branch.
  • We need 3 branches. One for our congress, on for our president, and one for our court.
  • And each branch can counteract the other so none get too powerful.
  • How will we set up the branches of our new government?
  • Whats with this whole debate over federalists, and anti-federalists?
  • Well us, the anti federalists, don't want the government getting to powerful and infringing on our rights.
  • And the federalists think that a stronger central government is necessary to defend us.
  • Well, you anti federalists won. We have now added a Bill of Rights to protect everyone's rights from the national government
  • Great, now I'll bring this to my state, and we will ratify this. Hopefully at least 8 more states will as well for this to be law.
