  • I have been justly rewarded for my travels.
  • They crossed the Arabian sea for 27 days. They arrived at Calicut on 20 May 1498. For three months they stayed and tried to work their way into the spice trade but were ultimately unsuccessful.

  • The crew prepared to return home from Malindi. The journey took 3 months and 30 men died from scurvy and other illnesses, including Paolo da Gamma. They returned with 54 men and two of the four ships.
  • I did what I needed to do to show them the power of the Portuguese.
  • Vasco da Gamma arrived in Lisbon on 18 September 1498, two years since his departure. The total travel was 38,600 km. He was greeted with much praise from Miguel I and the city.
  • These are the tokens of our appreciation!
  • Vasco da Gamma set sail in 1502 on Portugal's third major voyage to India. With him, he took 20 ships. Ten were his own and the other 10 belonged to his uncle and nephew.
  • Vasco da Gamma and his men raided Muslim ports and raised all hell. He captured the Muslim ship Meri with 400 passengers and burned them all to death. He then returned to Portugal in 1503 and was rewarded by the Portuguese and named Viceroy of India.
