The story takes place during the Great Depression between 1929 - 1939, centered around a girl named Lizabeth. She lives in a small run-down town with a group of children.
During these times, a woman named Mrs. Lottie plants flowers, and because of this Lizabeth and her friends taunt and make fun of her. Examples shown were of the children calling her witch, for showing how ugly their town is compared to those flowers, the marigolds.
So filled with hatred, Lizabeth and one of her friends head over to the Marigolds and destroy them. Mrs. Lottie comes out and is not mad, but rather sad, and broken. Lizabeth remarks this as her last childhood memory, as she then begins to understand the reason Miss Lottie Planted them. Mrs. Lottie planted them was to show that beauty can reside in even the darkest of times. With this knowledge as Lizabeth grew up, she began to plant Marigolds of her own, never forgetting this one day.
