  • To be, or not to be: that is the question
  • Hamlet is giving his soliloquy about whether or not he should kill himself. Hamlet's hamartia, or fatal flaw, is his indecisiveness.
  • PERIPETEIA
  • on the pendent boughs her coronet weeds Clambering to hang, an envious sliver broke
  • Queen Gertrude is explaining to Laertes that Ophelia has died. This is a peripeteia because Hamlet loved Ophelia and now his luck has changed and she is gone forever.
  • ANAGNORISIS
  • The Play's the Thing, wherein I'll catch the conscience of the King
  • Hamlet is explaining that there will be a play put on. This play is the anagnorisis, or point of recognition.
  • NEMESIS
  • Drink off this potion
  • Claudius is the evil character being punished for his vices. Hamlet finally gets the courage to kill him. This is the nemesis.
  • CATHARSIS
  • Another hit. What say you?
  • Hamlet and Laertes are battling. This provides the audience with some relief because everyone will get what they deserve. This relief is the catharsis.
  • THE END
