Beatty is explaining to Montag the history of firemen. He states that fire is a good thing, which, at this point in the story, is a lie. Fire is used to symbolize destruction. Since Beatty is a major figure of authority, the fact that he is lying indicates that there as many other lies surrounding the society.
Clarisse is saying how violent the society is and how people practically kill each other for fun. It opens Montag's eyes to how the society really is. It shows that even though the society seems perfect, it is actually terrible and dangerous. Bradbury makes it seem like the perfect world at the beginning of the story, but that quickly changes.
Montag's wife Mildred is in the hospital because she overdosed on sleeping pills. According to the doctor, this is nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, it is almost expected. Bradbury uses this as en example to show how unhappy the people are, even if they are not consciously aware of it. The society just makes people unhappy and empty.
