Atticus humanely shoots an old and sick dog named Tim Johnson, since its poor mental state is a danger to the people of the neighborhood. Jim and Scout see this, and realize that Atticus is an excellent gunsman.
As punishment for destroying a neighbor's flowers, Atticus tells Jem to read to Ms. Dubose for a month. After the month, Dubose dies as a result from an opium addiction she got herself off of while Jem was reading to her.
While Atticus is busy with his Tom Robinson case, Cal takes Jem and Scout with her to her colored persons church, the First Purchase church. This is where Jem and Scout first see the different sides to Cal, and the difference between her social and her professional life.
As everyone returns from First Purchase, it is revealed that Aunt Alexandra has moved in with the Finches for a temporary amount of time. Alexandra states that she is to be a "feminine influence" on Scout and Jem as they grow up.
Dill, unhappy with his new family, sneaks back to Macomb via train, and resides in Scout's room until she discovers him. Atticus, once he's told, allows Dill to stay in his home.
It is the night before the Tom Robinson hearing, and Atticus sits outside the jailhouse to protect his client, Tom himself. A mob gathers outside the jail, and Atticus is ready to defend Robinson; then Scout comes forward and embarrasses one of the mob members. This makes the crowd disband and return to their homes without hurting Robinson or Atticus.
