  • Foreshadowing
  • Fortunato is Italian for fortunate but Fortunato is not fortunate with his death happening.
  • Foreshadowing
  • "A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the throat of the chained form, seemed to thrust me back violently." This gives the story a spooky tone.
  • Imagery
  • "He had a weak point--this Fortunato--although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared. He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine." This gives us a hint that Montresor's revenge will involve wine.
  • Irony
  • Montresor pulls out a trowel when asked if he was a mason. The trowel is to hint us toward what he is going to do next.
  • "The niter!" I said; "see it hangs like moss among the vaults. We are below the river's bed. The drops of moisture trickle among the bones."
  • Fortunato dies on Ash Wednesday when he is supposed to give something up and ends up giving his life.
