Hello! I'm here to tell you how using the different genres empowered my instructional knowledge.
Before beginning this project, I reflected on how I had been taught about the Holocaust when I was in school. The teacher would tell us to turn to a page in our textbook, she would lecture, and we would hastily scribble notes. I never had the chance to draw my own conclusions. Why would I put forth the effort to think critically when the teacher was doing all the work FOR me?
I referenced our textbook many times when researching how to incorporate multiple texts into my lessons. I worked to implement genres that would give students an opportunity to comprehend and construct their OWN connections.
Instead of providing students with pages of informational text, I chose to use a song and a human interest story. Both of these genres provide valuable information about the Holocaust. These genres spurred new prereading, reading, and postreading strategies that I had not used before.
Using documents from the time period will allow students to step into the past and make connections based on varying perspectives.
Using different genres also gave me the freedom to create tasks where students could creatively respond to literature in a variety of genres. Modeling these strategies scaffolds the instruction for students. Multigenre writing allows students to build empathy and connections with the Holocaust unit.
