  • on june 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife, Sophie, were having an official visit to Sarajevo, the capital of Austria-Hungary's province of Bosnia. Ferdinand was the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Bosnia was taken over by Austria-Hungary years earlier, in which angered Bosnians. 7 terrorist were trained to assassinate the Heir, yet only one was able to fully assassinate the royal couple.

  • Nationalism created tensions within Europe. Nationalism caused European powers to put national interests first, paying no mind to the consequences for other countries.
  • Militarism is a policy of glorifying military power and values. When Germany made the choice of modernizing its military and add to its navy, Britain felt it had to do the same. The soon other major powers followed their lead. Sooner or later, nations of Europe were in full-scale military build.
  • Woodrow Wilson adopts the policy Neutrality. The U.S. would not be able to take side in conflict, i could offer loans and sell weapons and supplies to both sides. In a message to congress in 1914, Wilson urged Americans to remain "impartial in thought, as well as action". The European war was something the Unites States would have "nothing to do with."
