Storyboard Text

  • Liesel heard voices coming from the kitchen at night. When she peeked, she saw Mama's grave face watching Max drink up her soup and Papa sitting at the table. She wondered who these people were.
  • Yes, Papa.
  • Max Vandenburg came into the room quietly and laid down in the empty bed. Papa told Liesel that their new visitor would be staying in there for the night.
  • Everything good?
  • If you tell anyone about Max, I will burn your books and I will be taken away from you. Understand?
  • The next day, Liesel was staying home from school because she was "sick". Once Liesel was changed, Papa was waiting for her to tell her something. Down in the basement Papa told Liesel about his accordion story. After he told her that, he told her she was to not tell anyone about Max.
  • I understand, Papa, I do.
  • I see you two have met.
  • Max slept for three days. Liesel would watch him sleep. She noticed some similarities between them, one being that they both had nightmares. Three days later, Max woke up to Liesel watching him.
  • Papa!
  • Please.
  • Max couldn't believe he let himself sleep in Liesel's room. The basement was the only place for him. They brought the mattress down from the empty bed and made a place for Max.
  • I'm sorry. From now on I will stay down here and I won't make a sound.
  • Liesel had never seen Mama and Papa look at each other as much as they did since Max got there. There was a lot of gravity between them. But, it was them. Rosa and Hans. Max had nowhere else to go. They took care of them, fed him and helped him get clean.
  • Maybe we can move him?
  • But where?
