Edward Rochester hires Jane at Thornfield to teach Adele, his daughter. There she is treated with respect by Rochester and the two become very close and personal.
So, because Jane and Rochester fall in love they plan to get married. They are church ready until Mason, Rochester's friend, breaks up their marriage. Rochester cannot marry because he already has a wife whom he locked up in his attic.
Jane runs away because she is upset. She has no where to go, with little money. She ends up staying at the River's house where Diana and Mary are very welcoming. St. John is a bit shady but gets her a job teaching at a local schoolhouse.
