we didn't always live on Mango street...
Esperanza and her family moved around a lot. The family's new house on Mango street was all theirs. Esperanza had always dreamed of having her own, beautiful house. However, the house on Mango street was anything but what she dreamed of. This is where Esperanza begins to wish she lived or will one day live a different life.
Where are you Sally? Someone help me...
I love you, Spanish girl...
Esperanza goes to a carnival with Sally. At some point Sally disappears with some guy, leaving Esperanza. While Esperanza waited for Sally, a group of non-latino men attacks her. The event is nothing like the sexual encounters she had seen in movies. She is traumatized and blames Sally for leaving her. Her anger turns towards all the women who never told her what sex is like.
I am a storyteller. I will tell the story of a girl who did not want to belong..
Esperanza decides she will take all her experiences on Mango street and as a woman and tell them as stories. She will not be afraid of who she is or ashamed of what she has been through. She wishes to one day be independent, not need a man and to leave Mango street. However, she will never forget where she came from and will come back for others who could not get out on their own.
