Bilbo and the dwarves have encountered the trolls which was their first hardship they had to face. The trolls wanted to eat them but Gandalf risks his chance of being eaten to save them. This was where he proved he was a hero.
Their second hardship was when the wolves and the goblins came to chase the dwarves, Bilbo, and Gandalf up trees which was a test to see the heroism in anyone of them.
A hardship that could slowly harm them. Starvation. They have run out of food and someone is going to have to step up to help with their starvation problem. Right now no one is very happy
Gandalf was a very valuable person to them and an important hero, so to have him leave to go take care of some business would make an impact on the dwarves and Bilbo. Now they needed a hero to replace Gandalf and lead the way. Who will step up to the occasion?
Bilbo is that replacement for Gandalf. When the spiders were trying to eat the dwarves, he risked his life to save and free the dwarves.
You see that floating sword, that's "the" Bilbo Baggins. He risked his life so many times on the quest to save the dwarves who were held captive in prison by the wood elves. This shows true heroism.
