The idea of tax supported, mandatory schools was opposed until support rose because uneducated children would be disorderly later on.
Horace Mann, a representative in the House, decided he wanted to change the education system.
All children deserve education!
Mann fought for better schools and is known as the "Father of Public Education".
Mann also believed education should be free, going along with the idea of a tax supported school system.

In Massachusetts, Mann lengthened the school year to 6 months and made improvements to the school curriculum.
