  • France: Motive
  • France: Method
  • France: Change
  • The changes you and seek will only come through bloodshed!
  • In the picture above the queen and king of France are having an extravagant meal. Notice the Queen's fancy hairstyles as well. All of these luxuries cost money and that money is coming from poorer classes. The lower classes have to pay high taxes, while upper classes (nobles and clergy) don't pay any taxes. The lower classes thought it was unfair that they had to spend hard work on the extravagance of the king and queen.
  • Haiti: Motive
  • In the picture above, the lower classes are reacting to the unfair taxation that they have. The building represents the Bastille. People are storming inside to free all those who have been put in jail for not paying taxes. Due to a political crisis, they also send the nobles and some of the clergy to the guillotine. They eventually catch the king and queen and send them to Guillotine as well.
  • Haiti: Method
  • To handle France's new problems, The Committee of Public Safety was established. The above picture displays the committee. They demanded taxes from their people. They soon started attacking other countries and that's when Robespierre rose to be a leader of the committee. He believed in abolishing slavery and religious tolerance, but he thought it could only be done through violence. This started the reign of terror, where many people lost their lives due to execution.
  • Haiti: Change
  • Slaves were forced in under the decks of ships. There were often crammed in, while the sailors stayed above deck. The slaves were treated very badly on the ride to San Domingue. However the main reason of revolt was in San Domingue. Slaves were put to grueling and difficult tasks. They were forced to work mostly on sugar, which was the main export. The owners were very brutal and strict. The combination of the difficult work, without pay, and brutal plantation owners caused the Haitian Revolution.
  • In the picture above, the colonists are scared and trying to run away from the slaves. Before the attack, slaves swore to secrecy through voodoo. Their slave revolt was organized and very violent. Overall they used the method of an attack to try to stop the mistreatment of slaves and the black population.
  • In the picture above the land is being scorched by the slaves. They used this tactic to finally get the French off their land. This work because the fire was dangerous. Also even if a Frenchman survived, they would have no food because all their crops are burned. Overall the change was that slaves got what they wanted, freedom.
