  • The Exposition
  • The Conflict
  • The Rising Action
  • Every year on June 27th, a small town conducts a lottery, where everyone gathers and the heads of households choose from a box a paper, deciding if their family is chosen or not.
  • The Climax
  • When Bill Hutchingson chooses the winning paper, Tessie Hutchingson, his wife, makes a commotion saying he didn't have time to choose correctly and that this wasn't fair. But since he chose the paper, the entire family is called up to the box to choose.
  • The Falling Action
  • Bill, Tessie, and their three children, Bill Jr., Dave, and Nancy, all choose from the box. Everyone is quiet, and a girl hopes it's not Nancy who is chosen.
  • The Resolution
  • When they open up their papers, the children celebrate because they weren't chosen. People looked to Bill, but his was blank as well - so they all turned to Tessie.
  • After Bill forcably showed Tessie's marked paper, the other villagers began to pick up the stones kids had collected earlier, hurring up so they could get it over with.
  • Old Man Warner encourages people as the villagers start to throw rocks at Tessie - one hits her on the head, and she screams about how unfair it all is and the story ends.
