Seveso in Italy was a small chemical manufacturing plant where an industrial accident happened in 1976. This was because a batch process was interrupted prior to the removal of a chemical.
This accident killed 3300 animals and was the highest exposure to TCDD in a residential population. 440 people suffered from skin diseases.
Due to the accident the standardized industrial safety regulations surround this chemical appeared. The EU industrial safety regulations are known as the Seveso II Directive.
