  • The Revolution of 1911 creates a Republic as Sun Yat-sen is looking to unify China. After the president, Yuan Shikai, died the country is divided into two. Beijing, ruled by warlords in the north, and the south ruled by Sen Yat-sen, a rival Nationalist government.
  • Long March, 1934
  • On May 4, 1919, a massive student protest erupted in Beijing, fueled by Nationalist and Communist ideas of re-unifying China. The May Fourth Movement, along with China's split between the two rival governments, soon sent the nation down a new revolutionary path.
  • Japanese Invasion, 1937
  • If we unite, we can defeat Japan!
  • Nationalists and Communists capture Beijing in 1928 and unify China. Nationalist leader Chiang Kai Shek beings a purge of Communists, killing thousands. Mao Zedong emerges as a Communist leader. Then, the Nationalist armies defeat the Communists in battle.
  • After the Communists were defeated by the Nationalist armies, they being the Long March. Mao led his followers to rebuilt communism in a safe area outside Nationalist control. From Nationalist attacks, only 8,000 of Mao's followers arrived at their new base.
  • Follow me, Mao Zedong, to rebuild Communism!
  • Japan invaded China in 1937, bringing a halt to China's Civil War. Both sides agreed it was better to collectively resist Japan. The Nationalist Army took on the bulk of resistance and was severely weakened, while the Communist Army grew.
