Storyboard Text

  • June 27, 1880, Tuscumbia, Alabama
  • Captin!
  • A few years later
  • Blind, good heavens, do they expect one blind child to teach another?
  • At 19 months old Helen Keller is sick and diagnosed with brain fever. The doctor tells her parents that she will live and goes to talk to Mr.Keller and Mrs.Keller begins talking to Helen. After a while Mrs.Keller realizes that something is wrong with Helen. Kate (Mrs.Keller) begins testing her daughter's seeing and hearing abilities. She soon realizes that Helen can’t see anything and begins screaming her name. After Helen has no response to her mother’s call Kate realizes that Helen also can’t hear anything. She calls for her husband (Captain Keller / Mr. Keller) and they begin thinking about what they can do. Now 6 Helen is animalistic and spoiled. Her parents have not disciplined her at all and they give her whatever she wants. She gets angry easily and does not like being told “no”. One day Aunt Ev (Helen and James’ aunt) tells Captain Keller about a doctor in another state that could help Helen. Both of Helen’s parents disagree and James recommends putting Helen into an asylum. After a long conversation (and Helen knocking over her baby sister’s crib) Captain Keller decides to write to the school (Perkins institute). They are told that a teacher is coming to help and they should wait for her arrival. Kate meets the teacher who introduces herself as Annie Sullivan. Annie has no teaching experience and was once bind herself but is determined to help Helen.
  • Water, Helen. This is water. W, a, t, e, r. It has a name.
  • Once Captain Keller meets Annie he begins to ask Kate questions about her. He is already doubting Annie’s skills and abilities. Kate does not tell the Captain that Annie is only in her twenties and once she says that Annie was once bind Captain Keller is baffled and does not understand how Annie can teach Helen. Annie gives Helen a doll that was given to her by some blind children at the institute before she left. Helen takes an immediate interest in the doll and Annie begins to spell doll to Helen in sign language. Helen repeats the shapes that Annie made into her hand and James comes in and tells Annie about his doubts of Helen ever learning and Annie ever teaching her. Annie kicks James out of the room and begins spelling again. Whenever Annie spells doll she gives Helen the doll if she spells it back, but Helen is stubborn and just wants the doll. Helen does not understand that when she spells doll with her hands that it means the doll that she is holding and that is what Annie is trying to teach. Helen still wants only the doll and is constantly grabbing for it instead of mimicking Annie’s hands, as hard as Annie tries to get Helen to do what she wants Helen grabs the keys and locks Annie in her room. After James told everybody that Annie was locked in her room and they found Helen outside Captain Keller grabs a ladder and get Annie down from her room. Annie goes outside to see if Helen has the key and discovers that Helen had hid it in her mouth and was proceeding to throw it down the well. The next day Annie is writing a letter and she leaves Helen to sew something. Helen gets a little out of hand after hurting herself with the needle and then stabs Annie with it while Annie was trying to get Helen to spell card. Kate gives Helen a treat after she stabs Annie.
  • It's a very special day.
  • At breakfast everybody else is eating while Helen is reaching into everybody’s plate and not eating from her own. Annie watches as Helen slowly makes her way towards her plate and is prepared to stop Helen from eating her food. Once Helen gets to Annie’s plate Annie grabs Helen’s hand and moves it away, but Helen is just as stubborn as Annie and tries again for Annie’s plate. Annie moves Helen’s hand away again and Mr. and Mrs. Keller come to Helen’s aid telling Annie that Helen eats from their plates everyday and that is the only way they can have an adult conversation. Annie will not give in to their request to let Helen eat from her plate and ushers everybody out of the room and locks the doors. Annie then begins to attempt to get Helen to eat from her own plate, this alone takes a lot of time to do and once Annie can get that done she needs to get Helen to eat with a spoon. Helen normally eats with her hands and does not want to eat with a spoon and throws them all onto the ground. It takes hours for Annie to finish with Helen but when the two come out of the house Helen runs to Kate and Annie says: “She ate from her own plate. She ate with a spoon. Herself. And she folded her napkin.”. Annie finds the Kellers after that day and asks for complete control of Helen without her parents there. It takes them a while, but they agree and Annie tells them to give her two weeks with Helen in the garden house alone. After that it is agreed that Annie will take Helen to the garden house that will be remodeled and everything for them to stay in. Annie also takes one of the servant boys Percy with her to do chores and run errands for her. One day in and Helen won’t let Annie touch her after what had happened at the table during breakfast the day before.  Helen lets Annie touch her again after Annie spells to Percy and not her.
  • Yes!
  • Wah
  • Wah
  • On the last day of the two weeks Annie has taught Helen how to behave and croquet Helen has learned eighteen nouns and three verbs over those two weeks as well. Yet Annie does not feel like she accomplished enough because Helen has not learned that things have a name. Annie is rushing on her last day to teach Helen that things have a name and is rushing on her last day to teach Helen one word and that one word would open up the door to endless possibilities. At six o'clock Helen has to go back home and arrives to all of her favorite foods.
  • When Helen begins eating she puts her napkin onto the ground and Annie proceeds to pick it up. Helen and Annie repeat this action another time and Annie realizes that Helen is doing this on purpose. Despite the fact the he and Annie had had a talk about not undoing what Annie had done Captain Keller comes to Helen’s aid. Kate protest that it is a homecoming feat and that Helen should get a little bit of freedom. Annie begins to physically fight with Helen again and gets water all over her dress due to Helen throwing the full pitcher at Annie. Everybody lest Annie take Helen and the duo goes outside to refill the picture.
  • When they get to the water pump Annie is showing Helen what to do and spelling to her at the same time. While refilling the pitcher Helen gets water on her hands and relizes what it is. Helen tries to get the word water out and when she says: “wah wah” Annie tells Helen that she is corrects and Helen begins touching everything asking what it is. After understanding who her parents are Helen moves to Annie and asks what her name is and Annie tells Helen to call her teacher.
