Storyboard Text

  • Introduction
  • [Blanche sits in a chair very stiffly with her shoulders slightly hunched and her legs pressed close together and her hands tightly clutching her purse as if she were quite cold. After a while the blind look goes out of her eyes and she begins to look slowly around. Scene 1
  • Key moment #1
  • BLANCHE: Poker is so fascinating. Could I kibitz? STANLEY: You could not. Why don't you women go up and sit with Eunice? Scene 3
  • Explanation
  • I hate when he does that, scene 3
  • When Blanche arrives at the Kowalski household, the reader can portray a woman who's part of a high class who tends to look down upon others. She initially does not like the new environment that arrives in. She has certain views that don't match the views that the others in the house have. Blanche also seems to be perceived by the author as very feminine women. She always wants to assr superioty.
  • Key moment #2
  • [She drinks quickly] Oh, this buzzes right through me and feels so good! STELLA: Won't you have another? BLANCHE: No, one's my limit. STELLA: Sure? (scene 1)
  • In this scene, Mitch, Steve, Pablo, and Stanley are in a poker night. Stella and Blanche then arrive at the table, Blanch makes a comment in which she says that poker is very interesting and that she wants to paly. However, Stanley tells them to back ith the other women. Stanley hits Stella. There are no real reaction from Blanche which highlights one of the gender roles that women must follow.
  • Explanation
  • Blanche is always trying to show elegance and purity, there is a constant battle between her and Stanley in which she seems to combat gender roles but unintentionally she is part of the world full of gender roles.
  • There was mistreatment against Stella, although Stella did mention she hated what Stanely did, Blanche had no reaction nor comment. The gender role expressed here through Blanche is that women should not take action against men, but it can also be seen that Blanche was focused on mitch the whole time , also exposing the theme of Stella being a very "sexual" person in the book.
  • Synthesis
  • As Blanche arrives at the house, she takes a shot of whiskey in which describes as feeling "really good" which is highlighting her love for alcohol. When she is then offered another one, she says that one is here limit in which she seems to be trying to hide her love for alcohol.
  • Alcoholism in this society seems to be something that only men do, women are percieved as terrible if they act the same way. The gender role that is being presented here taht there is certain things that men can do and women can't, such in this case. Blanche wants to hid ethe fact that she drinks because is makes her have a terrible reputation in society. Women have many restrictions on what they cant do but men can.
  • The way that the author shows gender roles through Blanche is by showing the reader many of the things that men and women can and cannot do. The author also ties themes along in these scenes such as the theme of alcohol and how it looks bad on women to it and also sexual tensions that Blanche seems to always have, even if it is for her self-interest to look for men that can give her hat she wants and support her. The gender roles set restrictions on individuals with gives them limits to what they are able to do and stops them from free will in certain situations.
