Mama endures a lot of trouble even before they get to Manzanar, but not being able to feel safe or at home in the barracks was a hard task for her. She had to keep the family intact, maintain a sense of unity. This changes Mama because she has to take on some responsibilities of a man, while having the duties of being a mom, a worker, and a housewife. Her family looks up to her now and that is changing her to become a stronger person.
Another hardship that Mama had to face everyday and forced her to change some beliefs within herself was the bathroom situation. Mama "placed a high premium on personal privacy, respected it in others and insisted upon it for herself." (p.25). So when her own bathroom rights were taken away from her, it caused her to have to change herself and her desires.
When Papa comes back as a different man, that is really hard on Mama. Not only does she have to deal with an abusive husband now, but she still has to be the man of the family. All the fighting between Mama and Papa, decreases her self-esteem, she becomes weaker when they argue, because she can't fend for herself, even if it's just one of his crazy outbursts, she did all she could to keep the family together while he was gone, and when he came back he ripped it apart in seconds. This causes Mama to change her outlook, her love, and her whole life. She weakens herself on the inside to build Papa up on the outside, so he can still appear strong and still in control to the outside world.
