- "It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend."
- EXPOSITON
- CONFLICT
- "I continued, as was my won't, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation."
- RISING ACTION
- Montresor runs into Fortunato, during carnival, and offers to share a nice bottle of Amontillado with him. However, the Amontillado is in his catacombs.
- CLIMAX
- Montresor claims that Fortunato has gravely insulted him, and is plotting to get his revenge.
- FALLING ACTION
- "For the love of God, Montresor."
- As Montreso takes Fortunato down into the dreary and dark catacomb, he kept asking Fortunate if he would like to go back because he seems sick.
- RESOLUTION
- "Yes, I said for the love of God."
- When they get to where the wine was supposed to be, there is no Amontillado, but there is a hole in the wall. Montresor pushes Fortunate inside the hole, and begins to seal up the wall with bricks.
- As the last few bricks are laid, Fortunato yells for Montresor to stop, but it's too late.
- Montresor walks away yelling for Fortunato but he never replies. Montresor claims that no one has disturbed them for 50 years!
