Gilbert is stubborn. I know this because at the beginning of the story he wouldn't let Emmy be right, and tried to convince her that he was right.
I think that he is daring because after his dad dies he becomes more rebellious and staying out the house longer with Emmy and the twins.
His fathers death motivates Gilbert's actions because he feels more free to do whatever he wants with no restrictions. Another thing that motivates his actions is that Señor Uriarte and Mrs.Curie aren't stopping him.
One life changing event that occurs in Gilbert's life is when Mrs.Curie tells him that his dad died at sea and he was never going to see him again.
At the beginning of the story Gilbert is very sheltered and he can't really have fun because he has a lot of people who look after him. At the end of the story Gilbert is more free to do what he wants because his dad is dead and the people who looked after him are hesitant to stop him because of his dad.
He has become more free, at the end of the of the story he runs away at the beginning of the story he would never even think of doing that. So he has become more of a rebel but this change only occurs because his dad died.
