In 1618 he got placed in defence force of Maurice of Nassau, Dutch Republic. While this was going on he learned mathematics by learning and practicing it in his own time.
He also started talking with the principal of Dordrecht school, Isaac Beeckman but in 1630 they stopped working together because Descartes accused him of copying his ideas.
In 1622 he came back to France. When he was staying in paris he wrote his first essay called “Regulae ad Directionem Ingenii” (Rules for the Direction of the Mind). Then in 1628 he moved back to Dutch Republic. He stayed there 20 years.
