  • Paraphrase: Three people were hung and ravens ate their eyes & bodies.This made people afraid to go to Upton Wood.The first man was crazy/angry; the second man asked God to help him; the third one was a young boy. No one liked to go to Upton Wood except the maid. She watched the men dance. The maid died there.She was the daughter of the sheriff.
  • Connotation: imagery- "eyes like blue ice" juxtaposition- the nurse was not afraid to go to Upton Wood like everyone else was. simile- "like six black bowls"
  • Attitude/Tone Dark/Irony/Gloomy. End - Joy Shifts " The third was a lad shows the poem is focusing more on the boys death. " But the maid came there, who felt no fright" The Girl was the only one who had no fright.
  • Title ( Again ) Upton Wood is a place where people died and hung.
  • Theme Crime committed has a price to pay. Not even death can keep love apart.
