Storyboard Text

  • Flashback
  • "She could sec now that what she was sitting on was a woodpile next to the furnace. Millicent brushed back a strand of hair. It was stiff and sticky from the egg that they had broken on her head as she knelt blindfolded." (plath 1)
  • Symbol
  • "Heather birds live on the mythological moors and fly about all day long, singing wild and sweet in the sun. They're bright purple and have very tasty eyebrows." (Plath 8)
  • Simile
  • "The basement room was dark and warm, like the inside of a sealed jar" (Plath 1)
  • In the beginning and end of the story, it is said that Millicent is in the basement sitting on a woodpile waiting for her initiation for the sorority. But she goes right into a flashback on how she got into the situation she is in at the moment.
  • Quote
  • In the story, the biggest symbol is the Heather bird. It symbolizes freedom and self confidence. This is because Millicent feels like she needs people to accept her to feel good about herself. So this bird symbolizes her being coming confident and have to freedom to be herself.
  • Character (Bev)
  • In the beginning of the story, Millicent compares the basement as a sealed jar due to the fact. that she is not allowed to get out of it. So, you can see why Millicent compares the basement to a sealed jar, which nothing can get out of either.
  • Theme
  • This quote shows a very important part of the story. It shows how Millicent comes and makes her decision. It proves how she learns that she does not need peoples acceptance to feel good about herself.
  • "And then, for some reason, Millicent thought of the heather birds. dipping and darting, strong and proud in their freedom and their sometime loneliness. It was then that she made her decision." (Plath 9)
  • In the story, bev is not the most pleasing person. This is because she is the "big sister" of Millicent and is allowed to "Boss" Millicent around and tell her what to do and say. But she does not do it in a nice and positive way. In fact, she does the exact opposite.
  • " Into the house, gopher. There's a bed to be made and a room to be cleaned at the rep of the stairs. She found Bev's room and started making the bed. Smiling to herself... Bev was suddenly there in the doorway. " Wipe that smile off your face," she commanded. (Plath 5)
  • The overall theme in the story is that you don't need peoples forced acceptance to make yourself feel accpeted and welcomed. You shoudl have self-confidence without having to worry about what other people think of you
  • Within Millicent another melody soared, strong and exuberant, a triumphant answer to the music of the darting heather birds that sang so clear and lilting over the far lands. And she knew that her own private initiation had just begun.(Plath 9)
