Storyboard Text

  • Start of WWII 1939
  • Life in the U.S. during WWII
  • Major events during WWII
  • Grandpa was 8 years old and lived in a small town in the Ohio Valley with 9 other siblings. His oldest brother, Charles, joined the army.
  • Bombing of Pearl Harbor
  • Grandpa lived on a farm. Most people wanted to join the military. Families rationed coffee, sugar, and gasoline. He would find scrap metal to help during the war. They listened to the radio often to hear about the war and watched updates before picture shows.
  • Atomic bomb is dropped on Japan
  • Charles was killed mistakenly as being German, as they were close to invading Germany. The Constable (the sheriff) came to the farm to give them the bad news. Everyone mourned. Germany surrendered on VE-day (Victory in Europe) and everyone celebrated.
  • Japan surrenders, WWII ends
  • Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in a surprise attack. Everyone was in shock, and Grandpa thought that they had made a big mistake doing that. My great uncle also served in the Navy in the South Pacific.
  • Germans were close to creating the atom bomb, but we beat them to it and used it on Japan twice. Grandpa knew that the war would soon be over.
  • Japan, the last remaining enemy, finally surrendered and everyone was glad the war was over.Grandpa was now 13 years old, our age. In their small town they didn't celebrate out of respect for the families that had lost loved ones.
