The Giver takes place in a society that is considered "perfect." There is no emotions, color or individuality. Jonas is 11 and about to turn 12 and become an adult. He will get his job assignment at the ceremony,
By Jonas becoming the receiver he will come to feel and see things that others don't know about.
I am nervous about becoming the receiver of memories.
When Jonas becomes the new receiver, he receives memories that will change the way he feels about himself and the community. These are things no one else in the community knows about.
Jonas realizes that his dad's job of "releasing" is actually killing them. (young and old) If they aren't healthy. This is where Jonas decides he wants to change things. He can't accept the community's lack of value on human life.
Jonas flees the community with the new child Gabe to save him from being "released." He evades everyone and endures pain and hunger to bring himself to a world he has dreamed about.
"It's ok Gabe, I will keep you safe."
Jonas finds himself and Gabe sliding down a snow covered hill. Much like a memory he "received" earlier. He valued freedom of choice, individuality, emotion and human experience and these are things the "community" did not have.
"Look Gabe! we made it!"
