Rama, can you please help me? Monsters have been attacking my meditating place. Can you kill them for me?
Sure. I will help you.
In the kingdom of Ayodhya lived the king Dasaratha, with his 3 wives Kaikeyi, Kaushaliya, and Sumitra. Kaikeyi had a son named Bharata, Kaushaliya had a son named Rama, and Sumitra had twins named Lakshmana and Shatrughan. (Pictured from left to right)
One day, a Sage approaches Rama's help. Monsters had been attacking his meditation area, so he wanted Rama's help in defeating the monsters. Rama agreed to help and went away with the sage.
Dasratha, I want to use the 2 boons you granted me earlier. I want Bharata to succeed you as king instead of Rama, so I want you to send him out on exile, and make Bharata king.
Kaikeyi approaches King Dasaratha and tells him that she wants to use her 2 boons that Dasaratha had granted her. She tells Dasaratha to send Rama into exile, and make Bharata the king, rather than Rama becoming king.
I do not want to send him into exile, but I am helpless since I have granted you those boons.
