  • "And yet, when I'd bring home the wages to Father, he'd never let me have the money to buy myself something I needed." P. 89
  • Give me the money!!
  • 'Blindly, I grabbed my things together into a bundle, I didn't care where I was going or what would become of me.' P. 135-136
  • 'Ten hours I must work in the laundry. Two hours in the night school." P. 163
  • Father took the money of his working children to use for himself and the bills of the household. But, he didn't bother to give his children some money to buy what they desired. This showed that Father was dependent on his children. Father is an authoritative figure that Sara struggles with and he takes the money as an advantage.
  • 'That burning day when I got ready to leave to New York and start on my journey to college." P. 209
  • Sara decided that she was going to run away after her and Father argued over her letting a customer slide for 2 cents. Sara had enough of the treatment her father was giving and so she decided to run away. This shows independence on making decisions for yourself.
  • 'I followed her into the Kitchen and put ten dollars into her hand, "I'm going to give you this each week, and I'll see that my sister should give you ten dollars more regularly. Only take good care of Father."' p. 291-292

  • After running away from home, Sara realized the struggles of being independent and looking after herself. Being a young adult opened the eyes of Sara and she finally saw the struggle of being alone in america. She longed for her parents and overworked herself. Soon, you realize she was doing it for future happiness and stability.
  • "Not at all. Our home will be richer if your Father comes with us." P. 296
  • Our home will be richer!
  • Sara was happy to finally experience college in somewhere different, She was to experience what all the fuss was about. Sara was ready to finally do something that she wanted to, something that will make her happy and feel wanted. This shows independence to fulfill your own dreams.
  • After the death of Sara's mother, she realized that she has to fulfill the promise that she made to her mother, taking care of her Father and treating him right. Sara then realizes she must take care of Fathers new wife, including Father. Which shows dependence on Sara, as well as her sisters.
  • Hugo suggests that Father live with her and Hugo, which Hugo agrees with bringing Father with them. After all, he needs someone to look after him. Sara remembers the vow she made to her mother. But she also feels the weight of her father. This shows dependence on Sara once again.
