Cortes and allies defeated the people there to arrest him. The survivors joined Cortes. Moctezuma died due to stones hurled at him. 1520 Spanish tried to escape but the Aztec attacked. Many Spanish were killed due to the gold they were carrying.
Cortes and his people retreated to Tlaxcala for five months. Aztec began dying from small pox that had been brought by Spanish. Half the city population died in five days. The new Huey Tlatoani, Cuitlahua, died after being leader for 80 days
An Unforeseen Enemy
Cortes returned with allies while the Aztec had no allies to support the, fighting the Spanish was difficult. Aztec withstood siege for 75 days. Cortes blocked canals, causeways, and aqueducts. Citizens died from hunger and contaminated water. Aztec surrendered in 1521. Cuauhtemoc was hanged and Cortes became the govenor and captain.
