Oedipus was given away to many families as a child, then ended up at Polybus's home.
On the way to Thebes, Oedipus and King Lauis fought over who had the right to go first in the chariot and Oedipus killed Laius
The Sphinx would stop all travelers to Thebes and ask them a riddle, if it was incorrect, they would be killed and eaten, if they were successful, they would proceed on their journey.
"Man: as an infant, he crawls on all fours; as an adult, he walks on two legs and; in old age, he uses a 'walking' stick".
"What walks on four feet in the morning, two in the afternoon and three at night?"
Creon, had announced that any man who could rid the city of the Sphinx would be made king of Thebes, and would marry Queen Jocasta, who is Oedipus's mother.
This marriage of Oedipus to Jocasta fulfilled the rest of the prophecy. They had four children.
Oedipus and Jocasta found out they were mother & son, so Jocasta hung herself and Oedipus blinded himself.
