  • Clerc starts teaching
  • Today's Assignment:
  • Gallaudet went to the Braidwood school to find help to start his own school, but they were very secretive and refused to give him any assistance.
  • Establishment of ASL
  • Today's Assignment:
  • Gallaudet went to a lecture held by Abbé Sicard where he was showing the talents of his deaf students, Jean Massieu and Laurent Clerc. Gallaudet was amazed by their abilities to explain complex topics.
  • Gallaudet's successful Life
  • The American Asylum for Instruction for the Deaf and Dumb Persons was established and Clerc and Gallaudet both taught there. While teaching at the school, Clerc used fingerspelling, FSL, and methodical sign during class, but his students quickly changed those to their preferences.
  • They used this sign language system during class and out of class, but it was not considered an actual language until William Stokoe analyzed it nearly 150 years later.
  • Gallaudet went on to supervise the school. He married, and his family was very successful in the deaf community. His son, Thomas Gallaudet, established the first deaf church in the U.S.  His other son, Edward Miner Gallaudet, established and is president of the now Gallaudet University. Shortly after, a prominent Deaf community was established and has lots of support.
