  • The Dispute
  • We NEED slaves, we rely on them!!
  • The south wanted to spread slavery, but north wouldn't let that happen.
  • NO MORE SLAVES!!!!!!!!
  • You Better Not Ignore US!!!
  • The north placed high tariffs on European products, so Great Britain retaliated with tariffs on south's cotton.
  • We will nullify tariff, and maybe secede from the Union!
  • If you nullify the tariffs, I will attack you!
  • The Compromises
  • Let Missouri be omitted as slave state .
  • Fine! both will occur along with some other things for or against both sides.
  • Let California be omitted as a free state.
  • Once slavery was allowed in GA it rapidly spread to other states in the south. They depended on slavery for money. Northern were against slavery on the other hand, and wanted to suppress it. This caused tension between them. The southern states started to question their individual rights. They believed they should have the right to determine what was best for each state by implanting slaves in new territories.
  • Prevention and Blood
  • I agree that we need to accept it to help us out.
  • You both are crazy! We NEED our rights. Decline it!
  • As the south's economy grew, the north wanted to make more money off of high tariffs for trading purposes, and to make their economy bigger. However, the south wasn't selling anything, therefore they wanted lower tariffs because of Great Britain putting high tariffs on their cotton in response of the north's high tariffs. Northern states voted to renew the tariff, so SC threatened to nullify the tariff, and possibly secede from the union. In response Andrew Jackson threatened to attack them, so they stayed.
  • The Trigger Point
  • The Dred Scott Case in-raged the northeners, and caused so much tension. Eventually, the southerners were very irated because Abraham Lincoln was elected president. He wanted to abolish the spread of slavery. The vote was dictated by the previous Dred Scott Case, people wanted slavery and the unfairness to end.
  • The Union.Together and balanced
  • ,As this tension between the North and South was occurring, Missouri wanted to become a slave state, which would have ruined the balance of slave and free states. Because of this, they made a compromise saying that Missouri would be omitted as a slave state, and Maine would be omitted as a free state. Just a little bit later, the compromise of 1850 occurred. In this compromise, California was omitted as a free state, while Utah and New Mexico would decide based off popular sovereignty.
  • Secession Doesn't End Well
  • The Union. Southern states want to secede, and won. Now the Union isn't together.
  • Because of the Compromise of 1850, Georgia's leaders got together to decide if they would accept the compromise. Eventually, they accepted it, which would help the country stay away from civil war for 11 more years.. After that, the Kansas-Nebraska act came into play. This act let people in Kansas and Nebraska decide for themselves if they were slave or free states. This caused much violence in both territories because many people were fighting for the states to be slave or free states. This gave Kansas the name "Bleeding Kansas."
  • We should accept the compromise for our economy!
  • So we will accept the compromise! More say yes than no.
  • As the Kansas-Nebraska Act was in place a slave named Dred Scott was fighting for his freedom. Dred was relocated to Missouri, a free state, and he went to court saying that he was free also. The judge didn't favor him, and said he is wasn't a person, and they couldn't do anything. Only the states could, this created more tension between the North and South. Due to the sectionalism concerning slaves, especially Dred's case, an election was held. The Election of 1860 was won by Abraham Lincoln, a pro-abolistionis. The south was aroused, and that was the last straw.
  • No! You aren't a person, and can't file law suits on me. I don't have the power to stop slavery, and only the states can determine if they want slaves.
  • I shall be free because Missouri is a free state!
  • Slavery spreading+ Abe=Slavery containment
  • While the South tried to secede from the Union, Alexander Stephens played important role by speaking against secession, and allowing many things to be passed. He was a big asset.
  • Soon after the election, the south wanted to secede from the union. People like Robert Toombs were secessionist, and Alexander Stephens was against secession. The secessionist won, and the tension stirred up. Alexander Stephens was an important person during secession, Compromise of 1850, and Kansas-Nebraska Act. He helped pass the compromise and the act, and fought against secession. He supported slavery, but resisted secession.
  • We the southern states want to secede, slavery is what we rely on, and with Abraham as our president we won't be able to keep them.
  • I Alexander Stephens speak for anti-secession, y'all can't leave, we are stronger together. We can have a good economy.
