TELLSON'S BANK by temple bar was an old fashioned place, even in the year 1780 . It was very small, very dark, very ugly, very old fashioned. The owners of the bank were proud of its ugliness, proud that it was uncomfortable .
Outside TELLSON'S sat a porter who also acted as a messenger boy. he was never absent during business hours; and if he ever went out on an errand, his place was taken by his son. The present porter was a fellow by the name of JEREMY CRUNCHER.
All this time, the gentleman with the wig, sitting next MR. LORRY had been staring at the ceilling . his name was SYDNEY CARTON AND HE WAS A LAWYER.
