  • In the simple town of Goderville, the residents are getting ready to sell their merchendise.
  • Cow for sale! Price as is.
  • Maîte finds a piece of string in the dirt and picks it up in case it could be of use. He doesn't know that his spiteful neighbor is watching.
  • While eating with the town a messenger alerts the public of the pocket book.
  • Missing pocket book!! If seen return to the mayor!!
  • Later that evening the mayor requests the presents of Maîte.
  • That's the culprit who dug in the dirt
  • Of course it's you who blamed me
  • I did nothing! "There's nothing does you so much harm as being in disgrace for lying."
  • Maîte became a liar in the eyes of all town who heard of his lame story.
  • "Rouge" such a lie
  • "A little bit of string- a little bit of string- see, here it is, M'sieu' le Maire."
  • Until the end of his days, Maîte tried to prove his innocence but was only met with laughs from the townspeople. He died as the town liar with the lamest story. "In the delirium of the death-agony, he protested his innocence"
