Surprised, the parents find the kids at home. The father was happy that they were alive, but the stepmother made the father take them out into the forest again the next day.
There were no more flint stones, so Hansel made a path with bread crumbs. There father left again and Hansel and Gretel went to sleep.
They woke up expecting to follow the bread path home, but instead found that the birds ate the bread crumbs while they were asleep.
After searching for an exit out of the woods for hours, Hansel and Gretel came across a small house made of bread and sugar. Starving, the kids ran up to the house and started eating small bits from it. An old woman came out, complaining that something was eating her house. Once she saw it was two hungry kids, she invited them inside to eat. The kids followed the old woman in the house.
Once inside, the old woman makes Hansel and Gretel a meal, and lead them to a bed. During the night, the witch wakes up the children and exclaims that she is a witch and she is going to eat them.
The witch locks Hansel in a cage and feeds him to make him plump and make more of a meal. Because Gretel must do what the witch says or she will be killed, she goes out in the woods to find stick to make a fire for cooking Hansel.
