  • She could see now that she was on the woodpile next to a furnace.

  • The basement room was dark and warm, like the inside of a sealed jar, her eyes getting use to the strange dimness.

  • And really you didn't have to be in a club to feel related to other human beings.
  • From the start to end of the story Millicent was sitting on a wood pile deciding if she wanted to join the sorority or not.

  • Heather birds are mythological moors that and fly about all day singing wild and sweet in the sun.
  • Millicent started the story in a basement where she was sitting on a wood pile telling the story.

  • Millicent sat in her desk in a big study hall.
  • When Millicent was talking to people on the bus for part of the initiation she realized that she didn't need the sorority to be happy.
  • Personification
  • "Within Millicent another melody soared, strong and exuberant, a triumphant answer to the music of the darting heather birds that sang so clear and lilting over the far lands."
  • When Millicent and the old man on the bus were talking he was talking about sparrows and heather birds. Heather birds were unlike any other birds and did their own thing like Millicent before the sorority. The sparrows were all the same and represented everyone in the sorority doing the same thing.
  • When Millicent was sitting in her study hall she was thinking about what everyone would think of her tomorrow.
  • At the end of the story when Millicent choose not to join the sorority she heard the singing of heather birds.
