On a little farm lived a man and a wife with two children, Hansel and Gretel. The family was poor and had little food and therefore starving.
One night, the parents thought the kids were asleep; Gretel was, but Hansel wasn't. The parents spoke of abandoning the children in the woods because they did not have enough food. If they lived together, they would all starve. The husband was hesitant, but finally gave in to the stepmother's idea. The husband agreed that he wood tell the kids that they are going into the woods to chop down trees and collect wood, but really, he was going to leave them there to die.
Hansel heard the conversation between his parents and so he went outside and filled his pockets with flint stones.
When they walked into the woods, Hansel dropped flint stone occasionally to make a path back home.
The father told the kids to sleep and he would come and get them once he was done chopping down trees, but really he snuck off. When they woke up, the father was gone and Gretel started to cry, but Hansel told her the plan of following the flint stones back home.
