  • Acids & Bases Comic Strip By: Jacky Almaraz
  • Hi! my name is Jacky, i'm a student and author of this comic
  • hey Emma, what are acids and bases?
  • acids are substances that ionize (break off) in an aqueous solution to produce hydrogen (H+) ions while bases produce hydroxide (OH-) ions in solution.
  • how can you tell an acid from a base?
  • Any substance with a pH value between 0 up to 7 is considered acidic, whereas a pH value of 7 to 14 is a base. Acids are ionic compounds that break apart in water to form a hydrogen ion (H+).
  • Acids and bases are used around the house for cleaning, but the levels of acids and bases in the body are also important. The body needs a neutral pH and controls the amounts of acids and bases through processes involving the kidneys, lungs and blood.
  • How come they're so important?
  • well, Scientists use something called the pHscale to measure how acidic or basic a liquid is. Although there may be many types of ions in a solution, pH focuses on concentrations of hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-). The scale measures values from 0 all the way up to 14.
  • so what did you learn today?
