  • Anxiety
  • "I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever"(Poe 1).
  • Paranoid
  • "I had my head in, and was about to open the lantern, when my thumb slipped upon the tin fastening, and the old man sprang up in bed, crying our--"who's there?"(Poe 1).
  • Guilt
  • "Villains! I shrieked, dissemble no more! I admit the deed!--tear up the planks! here, here!--It is the beating of his hideous heart" (Poe 3).
  • The narrator is anxious to plan the old mans murder to get rid of that hideous eye.
  • In this scene the old man is paranoid that someone is coming to kill him and can not rest.
  • In this scene the guilt and paranoia was too much for him to handle. He eventually gives in after the emotions and the pounding of his heart is too much.
