"I had my head in, and was about to open the lantern, when my thumb slipped upon the tin fastening, and the old man sprang up in bed, crying our--"who's there?"(Poe 1).
"Villains! I shrieked, dissemble no more! I admit the deed!--tear up the planks! here, here!--It is the beating of his hideous heart" (Poe 3).
The narrator is anxious to plan the old mans murder to get rid of that hideous eye.
In this scene the old man is paranoid that someone is coming to kill him and can not rest.
In this scene the guilt and paranoia was too much for him to handle. He eventually gives in after the emotions and the pounding of his heart is too much.
