Jonas has not been assigned, he has been selected.
At the ceremony of 12's, Jonas was wondering why Chief Elder has skipped over him. She had realized the mistake she had made and apologized the the community.
After Chief Elder's apology, she made an announcement. She called Jonas up to the stage and made one thing clear. Jonas has not been assigned. He has been selected, something that very rarely happens to a 12.
As a part of Jonas's selection, he has been selected to be one of the most important and hardest roles of all. Jonas was selected as the next Receiver of Memory. Jonas' heart sank and was both confused and nervous of his mentally and physically painful journey.
Sadly, the one part of his journey requires separation. He is to be alone, and only with his mentor. This worries Jonas, if his community is about interdependence, why was he chosen to be alone. All of these rules and upcoming events made Jonas uneasy.
After his role was established, the Chief Elder went over the traits that had made him the Receiver of Memory. The traits of intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom, and the capacity to see beyond aloud him to be the Receiver. However, Jowas was wondering, why him, he knew there was someone better than him. But, who?
Intelligence. We are aware that Jonas has been a top student throughout his school days.
Just after Chief Elder explained the trait of the capacity to see beyond, Jonas had a flashback. To the incident of the apple changing in mid air. And when he looked out at the audience. It changed. Sure, it wasn't ninjas or gods, but something...changed. Jonas didn't know, but all he did know was that he was the Receiver of Memory.
