  • Hamartia: John is a good & respected man of the town, but his tragic flaw is he was unfaithful to his wife.
  • I can never forgive myself for committing adultery with Abigail
  • I love you John Proctor
  • Hubris/Extreme Pride: John feels guilty so he doesn't want to tell on Abigail.
  • John Proctor as Tragic Hero
  • Elizabeth you can't expect me to confess Abigail's sins when I can't confess my own
  • Why won't you tell them what Abby told you.
  • Anagnorisis/Critical Discovery: Abby accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft and John discovers how dangerous Abby is
  • I thought you were different Abigial
  • I want John all to myself
  • Peripeteia/Reversal of fortune: John confesses to adultery to protect his wife&friends but loses his reputation.
  • It is true... I had an affair with Abigail
  • Nemesis/Irreversible Fate: John decides not to confess to witchcraft so he wont sell out his friends or give up his good name.

  • Catharsis/After hero's fall: John is hanged for being accused of witchcraft but see's himself as a good man again and the townspeople realize the accusations are obnoxious.
