This moment is important because it not only lets us get the first glimpse into Chris's mind and the way he thinks, but starts of the entire chain of events of the story.
This moment after Chris had found out his Father killed Wellington. He was scared and afraid, and this was the start of his journey to not only meet his Mother, but overcome many great obstacles and challenges for someone like him.
This moment is the ending of Chris's story. His father has given him Sandy, in an attempt to make things up between them after all he did, and in turn mended the rift that was created between them.
