Chapter 3: Ten Against Grendel
In Chapter one, the author described that there was no king in the land of the Danes. Suddenly, a ship without a sail or sailors drifted up from the sea. People went to see what was in it. In it, was a child. They called the child Scyld Scefing and as he became older, he became king.
In Chapter two, Scyld Scefing had a son. That son had a son as well. Then that son had 4 children. Since Hrothgar was the strongest, he was king after his father died. Hrothgar had a dream about this beautiful hall that he wanted to build. He called it hall Heorot. Hrothgar had another dream that 30 of his men died in the hall. It became true.
In Chapter 3, Hrothgar decides that he would want to meet Grendel (the monster that killed 30 of his men) face to face. He waited by the door with several other knights with the sharpest swords. When Grendel comes, he is much stronger then Hrothgar imagined. He tore up his men piece by piece. Hrothgar was badly injured, but he didn't die.
