The Civil Code of 1804, also known as the Napoleonic Code stooped far short of the full equality advocated by liberal rationalists. Fathers were granted more control over their families and labor unions were forbidden.
In 1804, Bonaparte used the fear created by a fail assassination attempt to strengthen his hold in power. The plebiscite ratified another constitution which designated Napoleon as Emperor of the French.
Napoleon strategy over British during the war was called the Continental System. It harmed the European economies stirred up opposition to Napoleon. But eventually, the British economy survived because of it's location.
In 1807, a French army invaded the Iberian Peninsula. This war began a long campaign that played a critical role in Napoleons defeat. Napoleon's invasion of Spain led Latin Americans to view Spain as weak and to demand independence from foreign rule.
In September 1812 at Borodino, the bloodiest battle of the Napoleonic Era occurred. It cost the French 30,000 casualties, and the Russians about twice as many (60,000). Napoleon returned to Paris because he knew that the Russian failure would encourage plots against him at home, which left his army to struggle westward. Napoleon was defeated.

The Battle of Leipzig occured in October 1813 through March 1814. In October 1813, the combined armies of the fourth coalition decisively defeated Napoleon and the French army. By the end of March 1814, the allied army marched into Paris. Napoleon resigned and went to the island of Elba off the coast of Italy.
